Long live the puffer jacket!

The puffer jacket is an absolute essential item for any and all closets to keep out the cold and chill of the winter season. The old school puffer, typically with a nylon shell and puffed quilted sections filled with insulated material, is one of my favorite cold weather staples. It's also currently trending on the runways and on the streets which means an absolute Win Win cold weather situation! Yay for Puffer Season!

Now available in a rainbow of colors, and a variety of fabrics and styles, the puffer jacket has quickly become an essential item for any closet! They were super hot on the runways of Paris Fall/Winter 2017 Fashion Week, emerging as one of the top outerwear trends. Yay for fashion and function!

Long Live the Puffer Jacket: It's Puffer Season!

I remember the first puffer jacket I asked my Mom for.

It was a bright green J.Crew down jacket. I thought it was the coolest. I think it may have even been reversible and it went just past my waist.  When I unwrapped it Christmas morning, I was so excited to walk my college campus covered in J.Crew and puffer happiness. As a preppy college student at the time, pretty much my entire closet was J.Crew and my Mom made my year by gifting me that puffer.

I remember the first puffer jacket I thrifted.

It was fire engine red, although a bit faded, and was less than $5. Vintage LL Bean and missing a few feathers, it was one of my favorite thrifted finds at the time. I was in my early-20's and leading wilderness adventure trips and teaching outdoor education along the east and west coasts. My entire closet (and by closet, probably 1 suitcase worth of clothing) was almost entirely thrifted. I was pretty ecstatic by the LL Bean puffer find and wore it well. I eventually passed it on to my graduate school roommate, I wonder if she still has it today? Hey Meghan . . .

I remember the first brand NEW puffer jacket I purchased.

I had just moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan for graduate school at the University of Michigan and I knew winter was coming. Umm, have you heard about winter in Michigan?! This Pacific Northwest girl was a bit concerned and spent a lot of time researching before purchasing. I finally settled on a long black down jacket from Nau, a sustainable apparel company out of Portland Oregon. It was pretty much a sleeping bag and it was amazing. It lasted almost 10 years and I wore the sh*& out of it. I cried when it was time to part ways.

This year it was once again time for a new puffer jacket!

After again much research, I settled on the Everlane Long Puffer Jacket in Black. I've shared my love for Everlane before and their dedication to radical transparency and ethical fashion. In 2018 I'm committed to continue to spend my dollars with companies doing good things for our planet and the people of our planet. Everlane makes beautiful essentials in the best factories without traditional markups!

The Everlane Long Puffer Jacket is not only made well, it's ready for winter. Filled with PrimaLoft Gold Luxe insulation for frigid weather and a hood and flap pockets for a sporty look, it has passed the test when the temps have dipped below freezing and the snow started falling in Seattle. It does run slightly large and I would recommend sizing down, as I've found all I need underneath is a heatteach long sleeve from Uniqlo and I'm toasty warm.

For a recent walk at Alki Beach in the West Seattle neighborhood, I styled my new puffer jacket with some bright and fun cold weather accessories: a pair of fun sunglasses from Absurda, a bright mywalit bag, earmuffs from UR Powered, a beanie form King & Fifth and a scarf from Everlane.

Styled with my new puffer, favorite AYR skinny jeans and Brooks Heritage sneakers, and I was warm and ready for a walk along the beach even in winter. I'm a big fun of bright and fun accessories during winter to brighten up days when the temps drop and the sun is hiding. And, of course, I'm always a fan of the puffer jacket.

  2. After years of being the disgrace of winter outerwear, puffer jackets are back. In fact, the puffier, the better. And since stars are usually the first to jump on a trend, if not the very reason the trend exists in the first place, we've spotted them bundled up in their wonderfully insulated coat all season long.
