A Weekend on Whidbey Island

Thank you Whidbey Camano Islands for partnering on this post and hosting our stay at Inn at Langley and dinner at Orchard Kitchen. Whidbey and Camano Islands are located in the middle of Puget Sound and an easy drive from Seattle. The shortest distance to far away!

A Weekend on Whidbey Island

Just a quick drive and ferry ride from Seattle, Whidbey Island is one of my favorite destinations for a quick weekend getaway. For one, it's the Island I grew up on, and two, my fiancé S and I are getting married on Whidbey in September! Once an island girl, always an island girl! I recently partnered with Whidbey Camano Islands for a weekend visit to Whidbey Island for S and I to gather ideas for our guests for when they visit the island for our Wedding!

On Saturday morning, S and I packed our weekend bags and loaded up our recently purchased new-to-us Ford C-Max Electric Hybrid car (we so appreciated having an electric car on the island, as we discovered we could plug our car in at many spots on the island and hardly used any gas!).

A quick one hour drive from our 1918 craftsman home in West Seattle to the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal, we enjoyed our Saturday morning coffee as we headed north on Interstate 5. We made a quick stop for brunch at the Mukilteo Speedway Cafe before catching the Ferry to Whidbey. Crepes for me and Biscuits and Gravy for S, with a shared plate of french fries, yum!

The ferry ride to Whidbey (about 15 minutes) was magical, we saw Orca Whales! Just as we were departing the mainland dock the Captain let us know to look off the left bow, and low and behold we saw them breach! S and I knew we were in for a wonderful weekend on Whidbey. Thank you magnificent Orca whales!

Arriving at the Clinton Ferry dock, I exhaled slowly and took in a deep breath of that wonderful salty Island fresh air. Although we were only an hour from the City, I felt like a million miles away and also so at home. Seriously, once an island girl always an island girl.

We took the one highway that extends the length of the ~55 miles island to our first destination, Langley, The Village by the Sea. A quick 10 minute drive from the ferry and we arrived to check in at the Inn at Langley, the most loveliest of accommodations!

From the moment we parked our car, we felt the tranquility of the Inn descend upon us. The absolutely perfect Pacific Northwest details of the grounds and room had us debating if we would end up doing anything else on our itinerary other than lounging in the chairs along the boardwalk by the sea, or on our balcony, with a glass of Whidbey wine.

Our room, and every room, at the Inn at Langley features a view of the water and iconic coastal and mountain views from your balcony. An oversized jetted tub and wood burning fireplace (in each room) added to the luxury and retreat we immediately felt upon arriving. A perfect-for-a-sunset-walk beachfront, easy walk to the heart of Langley and amazing complimentary breakfast were just the beginning of our Inn at Langley experience, never leaving please!

However, after relaxing on our balcony with a bottle of wine, we began to get hungry. With reservations for Orchard Kitchen and stomachs grumbling, we finally gave in and got dressed for an island night on the town.

Orchard Kitchen is just a quick drive from the Inn at Langley (after unplugging our car from the inn's complimentary electric charging station) and is the ultimate farm to dining experience. With the feeling of being a guest at the Chef's intimate dinner party versus a customer at a restaurant, the farmhouse style dinner showcases the best of what's in season in an intimate family style setting, with wine and conversation flowing.

Our dinner began with a few hors d'oeuvres, including house-made kimchi (amazing) and I chose a glass of sparkling to kick off the dinner. You do have the option of doing a wine pairing with each of the served-family-style courses, although we chose to forgo it. Following the hors d'oeuvres, we enjoyed a salad of farm fresh romaine, sleeping beauty and crispy shallots, followed by a house made pappardelle pasta with last year's basil and spinach I could have eaten buckets of. Each course was a true delight and the final bite of rhubarb sorbet just made the meal even more memorable. This cozy community dinner is not to miss!

With our belly's full, we made our way back to the Inn at Langley and feel asleep to the sound of the waves crashing. A most delightful first day on the island!

Day two on the island began with a few cups of coffee enjoyed on our room's balcony while watching for whales, and than a delicious continental breakfast at the Inn, including house made granola, fresh baked goods, local coffee, fresh fruit, and more (S went with the hot options of eggs and potatoes, not pictured because he gobbled them up before I could snap a photo LOL).

After breakfast we headed into Langley to spend the morning exploring the village by the sea. Located on the south end of the island on a cliff overlooking the Saratoga Passage, Langley is also where I spent much of my childhood running amuck. With quiet walkable streets filled with boutiques, cafes, restaurants, wine tasting rooms, a glassblowing studio, bookstore, coffee shops and even a movie theater, the City of Langley truly feels like an escape from the city.

After a morning exploring, we checked out of the Inn at Langley to head north on the island. Having taken the ferry to the island, we opted for the longer drive around option to return home.We stopped at Greenbank Farm for a visit to Greenbank Cheese Specialty Foods & Gifts, picking out a spicy cheddar to pair with crackers for a picnic at Ebey's Landing and a quick car charge at their complimentary electric car charging station. I'd also recommend a visit to Whidbey Pies and Cafe (seriously, the most amazing pie!), also located at Greenbank Farm!

Continuing along the highway, we took a quick detour in Coupeville to picnic on the beach at Ebey's Landing National Historic Preserve . After skipping a few rocks, stretching our legs and enjoying our picnic lunch we headed north to our final destination for the weekend, Deception Pass.

A Weekend on Whidbey Island

Deception Pass is located at the northern end of Whidbey Island, with a bridge connecting to Fidalgo Island and than the mainland. One of just three ways to get on the Island (the other two by ferry from either Mukilteo or Port Townsend), the bridge is one of the scenic wonders of Washington and is a must see.

A Weekend on Whidbey Island

Deception Pass State Park is also Washington's most visited state park and for good reason. From magnificent views to rugged cliffs to stunning sunsets and of course the jaw dropping bridge, Deception Pass should definitely be on your bucket list if you haven't been!

A Weekend on Whidbey Island

S and I had such a lovely weekend on Whidbey Island. In went by far too fast and we can't wait to go back in September to say "I Do!". See you soon Whidbey! Once an Island Girl, Always an Island Girl!

xoxo

  1. Love all the highlights of your trip and made me eager to visit Whidbey Island again! P.S. I do not recall you "running amuck." Since I am your mother and was watching over you I like to think it was more like "running, gymnastics, and socializing." "Amuck" - I obviously missed a few things you didn't tell your mother about!
