A Weekend on Whidbey Island

Thursday, June 22, 2017

Thank you Whidbey Camano Islands for partnering on this post and hosting our stay at Inn at Langley and dinner at Orchard Kitchen. Whidbey and Camano Islands are located in the middle of Puget Sound and an easy drive from Seattle. The shortest distance to far away!

A Weekend on Whidbey Island

Just a quick drive and ferry ride from Seattle, Whidbey Island is one of my favorite destinations for a quick weekend getaway. For one, it's the Island I grew up on, and two, my fiancé S and I are getting married on Whidbey in September! Once an island girl, always an island girl! I recently partnered with Whidbey Camano Islands for a weekend visit to Whidbey Island for S and I to gather ideas for our guests for when they visit the island for our Wedding!

The Bride's Guide: 6 Essential Items to Prepare for Your Wedding Day

Well hello 3 month countdown to our Wedding Day! Things are getting seriously real over here in terms of wedding planning. S & I visited Whidbey Island a couple weekends ago (where I grew up and where we are getting married!) and found some great recommendations for our guests for lodging, dining and spending time on the island for our big day!

As much fun as we are having, I'm not gonna lie, wedding planning has been and continues to be a bit stressful. From our guest list, to dress shopping, to the food, to choosing our venue, it was hard to know where to start. With a vision in mind for the perfect day, I've partnered with Babble Box to share a list of 6 items to help things go a little smoother and to prepare any bride for her wedding day . . .

How I Keep My Hair Looking Fresh and Healthy Everyday in 3 Easy Steps

How I Keep My Hair Looking Fresh and Healthy Everyday in 3 Easy Steps

I have long, thick frizzy hair that is constantly a hassle in the morning. I am always on the lookout for ways to make my hair care and beauty routine easier and more effective, because as much as my hair is a hassle, it's also one of my favorite traits and I'm definitely not ready for the cut. I've partnered with Satin-lined Caps by Grace Eleyae to share how I keep my hair looking healthy in 3 easy steps.

Give a Sh!rt: 5 Steps to Lower Your Clothing Footprint

Friday, May 26, 2017

Thank you Value Village for partnering on this post! Sustainable fashion is "in" and when it comes down to it, the most sustainable clothing on our planet is clothing that already exists! Give a sh!rt about your clothing footprint! Affiliate links are used throughout this blog. All opinions are my own!

Give a Shi!t: 5 Steps to Lower Your Clothing Footprint

Did you know the world now consumes more than 80 billion pieces of new clothing each year (4x as much as in 1980), with more and more ending up in landfills?! On top of that, the average American throws away 81 pounds of clothing each year! That is crazy talk.

Fashion is one of the most wasteful industries on our planet and one of the largest sources of pollution; it takes over 700 gallons of water to make just one t-shirt and over 1800 gallons of water to make just one pair of jeans. That's over 2500 gallons of water for just one outfit. And water is just one of many natural resources required to make new clothing, Yikes!

Knowing that I am living on a planet with a finite amount of resources and with billions of other people, I am always looking for ways to reduce my ecological footprint ~ "the impact of a person or community on the environment, expressed as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources." - Oxford Dictionary

My Fiance and I have chosen to live in a small house (900 sq feet) in the City where we have access to public transportation (2 buses within a few blocks that can get us downtown in 15 minutes!) and restaurants, shops and parks within walking distance. We share one vehicle, an electric hybrid, and always consider where our food comes from and try to buy local (growing within 100 miles from where we live) when shopping for meals (hello farmer's markets, bread from our neighborhood bakery and local produce and dairy at grocery stores).

This year my goal is to lower the ecological footprint of my closet, because Earth Day is everyday!  Value Village just released the 2017 State of Reuse Report, examining perceptions around clothing consumption and reuse; I am taking note and giving a sh!rt about my clothing footprint!

Getting Married? Keep Your Guests Informed with Your Wedding Website!
Soon after S & I got engaged we knew we would need to put together a wedding website. This was actually one of the first things we did after S popped the question! With friends and family spread near and far, we wanted to make sure we had all the important details in one place to help our guests be able to focus on the celebration and not stress about the details.

A wedding website is an easy way for guests to find all the wedding info they need in one place and GoDaddy’s new website builder is a one-stop-shop for creating your own dream wedding website. We included our wedding site on our Save-the-Dates, knowing that many guests would need to make travel and lodging accommodations prior to our invitations going out. GoCentral gives engaged couples an easy way for their guests to find all the wedding info they need.

World Premier: Romy and Michele's High School Reunion The Musical at Seattle 5th Avenue Theatre! (& Tickets Giveaway!)

World Premier of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion Coming to Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre!

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion has always been a favorite. From the moment I saw it in the movie theater back in the 90's as a teenager, to each time I watch it now as one of my go-to films for re-watching, Romy & Michele is truly a cult classic 90s film. Particularly because of all the fabulous 90s fashion and those costumes! Hello dance routine to "Time after Time" in those mini-dresses!

The film turns 20 this year (does that make me old?!) and once again all things 90's are trending, which my inner High School self is absolutely loving (all the platforms, flared jeans, and baby tees please!) I recently read that the 90s are to today's teens what the 70s was to those of us coming of age in the 90s!

My 90s Teen self is so excited to thus share that the world premier of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion The Musical is coming to Seattle's own 5th Avenue Theatre this June! And I have 2 tickets to GIVE AWAY! (keep reading . . . !)

Wedding Registry Essentials: Outfit Your New Home Kitchen

The countdown is officially on! Less than 4 months until S and I get married on an island! We are deep into wedding planning with (most of) our vendors nailed down and focusing more on many of the details and, of course, continuing to add to our wedding registry, so fun!

Since S & I met in Ann Arbor, Michigan, one of the many things we have loved as a couple is enjoying a home cooked meal together. A visit to the farmers market, a quick stop for a bottle of wine and and a meal cooked together at home, is our idea of a great weekend day and/or evening. When creating our bridal registry, we wanted to include long-lasting, quality cookware that we will use for years to come.

This has become particularly true since moving into our new home in West Seattle. Prior to buying our first home, we lived in a loft in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle (with a kitchen so small we couldn't both fit in it at the same time) and before that we were in an apartment in Half Moon Bay on the California coast (again, hello tiniest of kitchens. . . ). We are so excited to now have a full kitchen to cook in!

As such, outfitting our new home kitchen is at at the top of our list of wedding registry essentials. Calphalon provides me with the highest quality tools, expertly crafted and designed, to bring the best out of every meal, which is so important for me and my fiancĂ© as we look to have the best cookware. When I register for Calphalon products, I know I’m registering for the highest performing tools for my kitchen. They have a variety of cookware, bakeware, cutlery and more!

Brunchin' in Neutrals - Story of My Dress

Disclosure: Affiliate links are used throughout this post. All thoughts are my own!

I am a firm believer in the Brunch. Whether a Sunday brunch with friends, a Saturday brunch with the fam' or a mid-week "let's play hookie" little Saturday (aka Wednesday) brunch with a bestie; brunch is always a good idea. Not breakfast, nor lunch, nor dinner; the brunch is an original with an eclectic personality.

For most brunches, my go-to outfit is a dress, sandals or mules and a favorite bag. I might accessorize with a sunhat and/or sunglasses if the weather is warm and the sun is shining, or add a sweater with a breeze.

However, my go-to outfit for brunch has not been working lately in Seattle. With a constant rain since last fall and temperatures barely crawling above 50, I needed a new go-to brunch outfit stat. With a bit of a surprise, I turned to pieces that tended towards neutral. And when I think neutrals, I typically think fall, not spring.

Well it turns out I love to wear neutrals in spring too! Neutrals are great pieces to have in your wardrobe for year-round and in no way need to be limited by season. Pairing well with other neutrals or colors, they provide flexibility no matter the situation.

For cooler temps, wind that is not just a breeze and overcast days, layers are key. For a recent brunch with friends at Luna Park Cafe in West Seattle, I turned to a few of my closet staples and wardrobe favorites: a fisherman sweater from Madewell, faux leather leggings from Zara, a MaxMara Safari Jacket I've had forever and a vintage leather bag I found at a thrift shop on the California coast when we lived in Half Moon Bay.

Brunchin' in Neutrals - Story of My Dress

I paired these closet favorites with a few recent additions to my wardrobe: Earrings and Necklace c/o Rebekah J Designs, dv Kenli perforated mule booties from Target and Gap Aviator Sunglasses. Both the Paths Between Necklace and Fortunate Earrings are from Rebekah J Designs' fragment Collection. Rebekah J Designs is based in West Seattle and all her pieces are stunning!

One of my favorites, the Paths Between Necklace by Rebekah J Designs, is perfect for layering with other jewelry or as a stand alone piece. Cast in brass and hung from a 14k gold fill chain, the necklace is a great reminder that "there's more than one route to take you there", no matter where 'there' may be.

Another favorite, the Fortunate Earrings by Rebekah J Design are hand carved with texture on one side and polished on the other. An elevated take on your everyday basic hoop, they're the perfect way to remember that "sometimes it's the simplest things that remind us how fortunate we really are."

And as a special offer for Story of My Dress readers, you can take 20% off all Rebekah J Designs products on www.rebekahjdesigns.com! Just use code STORY20!

Ready for brunch please!

LUZIA: A Waking Dream of Mexico by Cirque du Soleil

Tuesday, April 4, 2017

Disclosure: I received tickets in exchange for press coverage. All opinions are my own!

A magical, dream of acrobatics, music, incredible costumes and performances held me to constant attention at the Cirque du Soleil Seattle premier of LUZIA: A Waking Dream of Mexico. From beginning to end, the almost psychedelic nature of LUZIA was nothing like I had ever experienced before. It was my first Cirque du Soleil and it will not be my last.

From the moment we parked and started walking towards The Big Top I felt as if I was in some sort of fantasy world or waking dream. This was not the Pickle Family Circus or Barnum & Bailey Circus I remember from my childhood.

With a glass of champagne (a beer for my fiance) and 2 VIP popcorn's (very important popcorn), we took our seats for the Seattle Premier of LUZIA. Transported to an imaginary Mexico and suspended between reality and a dream world, LUZIA from Cirque du Soleil invites you to explore all your senses in a wondrous world enveloped in light and nurtured by rain.

Embracing Fewer, Better Things in My Closet with Cuyana

Embracing Fewer, Better Things

This Spring I am all about embracing fewer, better things in my closet. I want a closet I can peek into and know immediately I want to wear everything in sight. I want a lean closet that is full of high quality, beautiful pieces, and "fewer, better" things. As such, I was so excited when Cuyana reached out to share with me that they would be stopping by Seattle on their Essentials Tour with a Pop-Up Shop this weekend!

It's (almost) Sandal Season!

Sandal Season

Today is officially the first day of Spring! And I am in serious celebration mode. Alongside the first blooms of the year, chirping birds and of course sunshine, the Spring season also brings with it the return of my favorite shoe, the sandal! It's (almost) Sandal season! And while it might be a little early for flip flops or strappy sandals, a few sandals definitely make the cut for early Spring.

Just Got Engaged? 6 Things To Do Right Away!

Just got engaged?! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

It's the 6 month countdown until S and I say "I Do"! And 6 months since S dropped down on one knee and proposed at sunset on a Washington Coast beach. We were out for one last end-of summer camping trip and it was absolutely perfect. Accompanied by a bottle of wine, we were enjoying a sunset beach bonfire (yes, you can really have a campfire right on the beach of the pacific ocean coast!) and breathing in that gorgeous salty fresh beach air. As the sun dipped just below the horizon, he pulled me towards the Pacific Ocean and dropped down on one knee. It was utterly romantic and I, of course, said an immediate YES!

Since it was late at night, we were out of cell phone range and on West Coast time with alot of our family in the Midwest and on the East Coast, we chose to wait til the drive home to share the news. We had over 12 hours to just savor the moment, start dreaming of our wedding and celebrate just the two of us!

Since those 12 hours, we have been fully immersed in wedding planning. Beginning with phone calls to friends and family to share the news and resulting in questions of when, where, etc. . . right away, I have realized planning a wedding really is a full time job, even if you're working with a wedding planner or coordinator! With 6 months down and 6 months to go, I thought now would be the perfect time to share 6 things I found were super important to do right away after I got engaged. And of course a huge congrats!

AEON NEUE FASHION SHOW

You're invited to The Art Institute of Seattle's annual fashion show! On March 15, 2017, Aeon Neue Fashion, a student run fashion show featuring upcoming designers, will showcase at Canvas Event Space in Seattle.

One of my favorite runway shows from 2016, this student run fashion show is the perfect opportunity to appreciate upcoming student designs and meet and network with professionals in the fashion industry.

For this year's show, designers were inspired by their "It" girl. The It Girl that doesn't care what you think. She is fierce, rebellious and in charge. She is the modern and young spotlight of Seattle. She defines Aeon Neue Fashion, "Our Vision. Our Future." I cannot wait to see these designs!

5 Beauty Upgrades To Make Traveling a Breeze

5 Beauty Upgrades To Make Traveling a Breeze

After years of jet-setting, including 5 continents checked off my bucket list and a semester in college spent traveling around the world by boat, I have learned the art of packing a suitcase. I tend to be a minimalist packer, choosing to pick up many items needed throughout my vacation (the perfect souvenir!). I can now fit everything I need into a carry-on bag for any length of trip! However, there are a few beauty essentials I refuse to leave home without. Today I'm sharing with you 5 beauty upgrades that keep my skincare on point, take up very little space and make traveling a breeze!

Seattle Style Lab

Have you heard the news?! The first Seattle style blogger conference for 2017 is coming in March!  While the exact date for the Gossip & Glamour Style Summit has yet to be announced, I know I can anticipate a fabulous event that is well worth attending!

I attended my first two Seattle Style Blogger conferences in 2016 and loved every moment of each. The first was Stylish in Seattle, a spring style summit for Seattle's top fashion bloggers, which was held at Coterie Work Lounge and was incredibly inspiring (I even got to meet Moorea Seal!). The second was Seattle Style Lab, held at General Assembly Seattle, and included a wealth of insider info on starting and creating a fashion blog.

In honor of the upcoming Seattle Spring Style Summit (seriously so excited!), here are 5 things I learned at Seattle Style Lab:

RH Gallery at University Village

The new RH Gallery has opened at University Village and it is seriously breathtaking! I had the opportunity to attend the VIP Grand Opening party and a press tour before the official opening, and each room I wandered through was simply stunning. Whether you are contemplating a decor overhaul for your home for the new year or just love to wander through beautiful spaces, you are definitely going to want to add a visit to the new RH Gallery at University Village to your 2017 bucket list.

Happy New Year! I cannot believe it's 2017 and the year S and I are getting married! That's right, he put a ring on it! I am just loving being engaged and am currently in full wedding planning mode; seriously so excited for the year ahead. Over the holidays I took some time out from the family festivities and wedding planning madness to visit LT Denny Jewelers in Pioneer Square and play dress up with FireCushion Diamonds. Because who can resist the opportunity to play dress up with diamonds? Definitely not me!
